PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear
Members,
By
now I'm certain that you have all renewed your membership! If
you haven't, you can still bring it to the next meeting.
If you you were giving it second thoughts, perhaps you would
like to review our newsletter and see what ESQ has to offer
this year. Our "Tips, Tricks & Techniques" workshop
prior to our meetings is a smash hit! I personally cannot
wait until the next one! And I can't wait to get scissors
and yard tools sharpened at our next meeting either!
There is so much I'm looking forward to and I hope you share
my enthusiasm! Please review our Calendar of Events!
Nothing will make me happier than to see all of you there!
Sew
long and happy,
Cathy
COMMUNITY SERVICE
NEWS
by Betty Vernillo
and Marie Arbucci
Honor Roll of
Evening Stars: The
following guild members names have been added to our Evening
Star Honor Roll. They have fulfilled
the obligation to make one community service quilt during
each guild year.
Marie Arbucci Pat
Cacace Marge
Geary Ellie
Pucciariello
Carmen Cardillo
and Judy Klein made some more wheelchair bags.
So far nine of
our members have donated 13 quilts and we have 20 wheelchair
bags for our veterans in Northport compliments of just two
women. Great
work, Ladies!
###
Here’s Webster’s
definition of a quilt:
“A coverlet or blanket made of two layers of fabric
with a layer of cotton, wool, feathers, or down in between,
all stitched together,
usually in a decorative crisscross design.”
The meaning of
to quilt, again according to Webster: “To make into a quilt
by stitching layers
of fabric together.”
Ah, you see, that
is why we ask that your community service quilts be quilted
or tied. Without
either of these techniques, the batting will end up balled
together in the corners once the quilt is washed and dried.
In other words, the quilt will be a mess and it will
not serve its intended purpose.
So, we request once again, please quilt or tie
your quilt.
Community service
quilts are utilitarian quilts, i.e. not heirlooms.
If you wish to make a particularly artistic quilt,
that would be wonderful.
For most of us, however, something simple and pretty
is not only fine, it’s perfect.
We hope to have
available at our next guild meeting a supply of instructions
for an easy quilt, along with dimensions of the quilts for
the organizations that will receive them. In addition, we will
have a limited supply of backing fabric on our table in August.
Stop by and if you take a piece, we’ll hold you to
using it in your donated quilt.
The same is true of the fabric we have available for
quilts or wheelchair bags. So, come on over to
our table and see what we have.
Mineola Centennial Celebration
As many of you
know, we are going to help Mineola celebrate their centennial
year, 2006, by making special quilts for some of Mineola’s organizations. It will be our way of
saying thank you and showing our gratitude for the use of
their community center.
Without this kind and generous offer, it would be difficult
for the Quild to serve its members and the community.
The Quild will be providing fabric, batting, and backing. All you have to do is
come and join in the fun! Look for this special
event in January! (Note:
The Quild is accepting minimum one yard pieces
of fabric for donation towards the Centennial quilts)
Fort Washington Trip
DON’T BE LEFT
BEHIND!! We still
have seats available for our annual bus trip to Fort Washington. We will be leaving from
the Mineola Community Center on Saturday,
September 17th, at 7:00 AM and returning at approximately
6:00 PM.
QUILTS! QUILTS!
QUILTS! AND VENDORS GALORE!!! I can’t think of a better
way to spend a Saturday. So bring your check
(made out to Evening Star Quilters in the amount of $30.00)
or cash, to the August Meeting. Relax and let us do
the driving! For
further information contact Elaine Thibault.
Help Wanted
Photographer: Member with digital
camera required to photograph Show and Tell items for inclusion
on out web page. For information, please
contact Donna Stalworth.
Trip Coordinator:
Do you enjoy bus trips?
Do you think the Quild should arrange some? If so, please consider
volunteering to be the Evening Star Quilters’ trip chairperson.
Contact Cathy Peterson for information.
REMINDERS
The scissor sharpener
will be at our next meeting. His truck will be at
the Center at 6:45 PM.
He does an excellent job at reasonable prices. Sharpening is not just
limited to scissors – bring your knives, garden tools, etc.
We will have a
quilt judge at this year’s show. If you would like to
have your work judged, please indicate as much on your quilt
application (if you change your mind – please let the committee
members know well in advance).

the June Block of the Month were Ellie Pucciariello, Marie

Catskill Mountain Quilt Show
Reported by Joann Isernia
The Catskill Mountain
Quilt Show was held on the weekend of July 9th
and 10th on Main Street
in the town of Hunter, New York.
The show sponsored
quilts made by local members and an exceptional exhibit by
members of the Haudenosaunee quilters from the Mohawk, Seneca,
and Oneida nations. Local vendors from various
area shops were represented as were other local craft artisans.
Mext year’s show
will exhibit Dutch quilting traditions and will include items
from the Netherlands. It will be held on the
weekend of July 8th and 9th, 2006.
Note from the
Editor:
This will be the
last issue going out to those of you have not yet renewed
your membership. We
appreciate your support and contributions and sincerely hope
this has only been an oversight on your part. Please come back to
the Evening Star Quilters! We have a wonderful
year planned as you can see by our schedule (printed here
in its entirety):
