PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
|
| |
|
Dear Evening Star Quilters,
I have to say that January's meeting was WONDERFUL!
It was great to see all the teams working so hard and
it was even greater to see what was accomplished! All
participants should be very proud. A BIG thank you goes
out to Claudette Carter and the team leaders: Marie
Arbucci, Helen Darvie and Elaine Thibault. And let's
not forget Pat Cacace who was there for all the planning
and did a lot behind the scenes. If you were at the
meeting you know that we intend to continue the work
at February's meeting since our speaker cancelled. We
will work in the same teams as last month. Please bring
your sewing supplies! We may not need all the squarer
uppers, so if you were one, please bring scissors, needles
and pearl cotton for tying the quilts. WE ARE ON A ROLL!
Bring anything you need to work because we'll be piecing
more tops, sandwiching and finishing quilts. Granted,
this may sound a little optimistic, but let's give it
a try! Bring happy hearts and willing hands! Thank you
so much for helping to make this project a success!
Sew long and happy, Cathy

COMMUNITY SERVICE
NEWS
|
|
by Betty Vernillo and Marie Arbucci
The holidays are behind us but we still feel the glow.
It was our pleasure to deliver your beautiful quilts
to three organizations. The Nassau County Coalition
against Domestic Violence received 23 quilts, Lutheran
Family and Community Services 22 quilts and 4 crocheted
afghans, and the VA Hospital in Northport 25 wheelchair
quilts and 69 wheelchair bags. All three organizations
were grateful for your contributions, and all are aware
of your dedication. The people at the Coalition, located
in Hempstead, showed us their "Christmas" room, where
they had 87 piles of gifts for the 87 children the agency
"adopted" for the holidays.
Our stockpile for the next delivery, which will be
made in May at the end of our guild year, is growing
already. In January quilts were turned in by three members:
Loretta Ruff, Nancy Spatafora, and Lina Tokarski.
Ten wheelchair bags were received from Carmen Caldeiro
and Nancy Spatafora, five each. Thank you, Ladies.
Thus far 35 members have fulfilled the membership obligation
by completing one "charity" quilt during this guild
year. That¹s almost 40 percent. We hope to reach 100
percent by our May meeting. We understand that there
are times when someone will not be able to meet this
requirement. Please see either one of us if that is
the case, let us know that you can not do it this year,
and the guild will waive the requirement where necessary.

ESQ Needs
You!
Starting
in June positions will be available and your guild needs
you. Whether you are a new or an old member, don't worry
- these positions can be fun and you meet a lot more
people by being involved. Join the team! Please see
if any of these positions interest you and contact Cathy
Peterson: 516-326-6719 or catcanquilt@verizon.net
Block of
the Month Person - This person would choose a block
of the month and submit it to the newsletter chair for
publication. The person would also accept the blocks
made and handle the raffle of those blocks.
Two Program/Workshops
People - These two people would have to work together
to help plan monthly activities of the guild. They would
attend the monthly board meetings, work within a budget,
be required to send a contract if need be and find a
location for an outside workshop if need be. You would
receive suggestions from board members and guild members
on what they might be interested in and there is also
a book available of teachers/lecturers to help in the
search.
Hospitality
Chair - This person would not have to attend board meetings
but would be responsible for arriving a little early
to the monthly meetings in order to set up the coffee/tea.
The Hospitality Chair would also receive a current membership
list and contact different people every month to ask
if they could bring in a little treat for the members.
If you are
interested in any of these positions, please contact
Cathy. Thank you very much!

Chinese
Auction Chair Needed
As many of
you know, our May dinner has a Chinese Auction. We
are looking for someone to take charge of this event.
What's needed? A person or two to accept or collect
sewing or quilt related items (you can put out a call
to the membership for donations), organize the items
at the dinner with cups in front of them so people
can put in their tickets, and then raffle them off
by the end of the dinner. If you would like to be
in charge of this event, please contact Cathy Peterson.
Thank you
very much!

MEMBERSHIP
ESQ now has
a membership of 88 quilters. Welcome to our newest
member...a new quilter as well...Rosanna Guido of
Westbury. While introducing Rosana to the guild, it
was apparent how friendly and talented and active
we are as a group...but there is an area that needs
your support. That is the BOM. This is a wonderful
activity for a guild but it cannot be "wonderful"
without the support of the members. For the meeting
in February, be an ESQ Valentine...make a block for
the BOM raffle. As an added incentive, Membership
will give you a chance for a special raffle for BOM
participants

NATIONAL
QUILT MONTH - MARCH
Every year
we celebrate the art of quilting across the country
during the month of March. Our guild has an opportunity
to put on a small gallery show in the Mineola Library
during the month. We are asking any member who has
a "minature" quilt that they would like to share,
please consider showing it in this educational display.
If it is completed, please bring it to the February
general meeting or speak to me at the meeting. Jackie
Carway
