COMMUNITY SERVICE NEWS

by Betty Vernillo and Marie Arbucci

It¹s time to make a delivery. Community service quilts are almost spillingout of their closet. Our thanks this month to--

Leni Blumenfeld

Carmen Caldeiro

Ruth Case

Margaret DeAcetis

Barbara Goodloe

Connie Hanan

Bev Numssen

Lucy Torres

--all of whom have completed their "charity" quilts. We also thank

AnaMaria

Caldeiro-Badilla

and Carmen Caldeiro

for increasing our supply of wheelchair bags.

If you haven¹t made your community service quilt, now¹s the time to do it. We¹ll be anxiously awaiting your offering at our November and December meetings. We plan to make deliveries to our three designated charities before the holidays.

If you are inclined to make a wheelchair quilt (38" x 38"), we could sure use them. Many of our members have made quilts using baby/juvenile patterns, which of course are always welcome. But if you have some fabric that would be appropriate for a veteran (male and/or female), we¹d appreciate getting some more wheelchair quilts. We¹ll be at our usual spot at the November meeting with baskets just waiting for your quilts.

Note: One of our members has contributed a bag full of dungaree back pockets and a bag full of fabric strips. Anyone interested in either or both, please call one of us and we¹ll bring them to our November meeting.

(Marie or Betty) .

Mineola Quilts!

As many of you know, we are collecting fabric to make the quilts to benefit Mineola charities. Go to your closets, look under those beds or where ever it is that you hide your stash and see if you see a yard of so of fabric that you can part with. If so, we can use it! We intend to make scrappy quilts from simple patterns and your donation will be greatly appreciated! Please bring it to the November or December guild meeting. Our goal is to have this fabric all cut and ready for the games to begin in January! Claudette Carter will be forming "teams" of people to work together on the assembly lines. This is one sweat shop that is going to be fun! SIGN UP NOW!

Quilter's FabriCalcT for Quilt Design and Fabric Estimating Conceived

by Avid Nevada Quilter

Carson City, NV, October 4, 2005 - Calculated Industries, Inc., a leading manufacturer of specialty calculators has announced the release of the Quilter's FabriCalc which will be formally introduced October 27, 2005 at the International Quilt Market Dealer Fall Show and Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas.

"The idea for a calculator for quilters was championed by Susie Blades, long-time Calculated Industries staff member, avid quilter and a former quilt-shop owner," said Steve Kennedy, Calculated Industries' President, acknowledging Blades' vision for the new product. "The Quilter's FabriCalc was developed primarily for the "traditional" or "patchwork" quilter."

The new Quilter's FabriCalc is a 42-key hand-held portable calculator that has been produced specifically for quilting design and yardage calculations. It works in Yards, Inch-Fractions, Meters, Centimeters, and Millimeters. It easily converts dimensions between U.S. and Metric measurement.

All the keys are labeled in quilting terms and the calculator provides understandable built-in solutions with explanatory labels. It has been intuitively designed by color-coding and organizing the function keys in groups for various categories based on how a user would "break-down" individual quilting pieces and determine the amount of fabric required to make a quilt. "Reverse calculations" can also be done allowing the designer to effectively use material in their fabric "Stash".

"It is an ideal tool and simple to use. It helps the quilter complete the calculations needed to plan and estimate the amount of fabric required for a quilt," according to Blades. "The quilter can be confident that the mathematics are accurate and then focus on the creative aspects of design and layout."

Problem-Solving Features:

* Find total Yardage, including Backing, Binding, Borders and Drop for any quilting project * Calculate the total yardage for Squares, ½ Square Triangles, ¼ Square Triangles, 45° and 60° Diamonds. Or, find the number of squares and diamonds that can be cut from fabric in "stash"

* Create quilt designs using Block functions with or without sashing; solves Diagonals

* Store fabric yardage for six individual types of fabric and view total yardage required for all fabrics

* User-enabled preferences allow customized settings for Fractionand/or Decimal displays, Mitered or Straight Corners and much more

* Find total costs for material
