PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Fellow Quilters, I totally forgot about writing a President's message because I was so busy trying to make a President's Challenge entry! Well, that and my life in general. (I just hope Meryl forgives me!) I actually remembered at 2:30 last night and just couldn't get out of bed to do it. I have to say that I'm so proud of our guild because we have over 100 entries for the show. YIPPEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! I'm also proud and appreciative of all the people who have worked on the show. And guess what - Mark Lipinski is finally coming! In November! So if you "missed" him the last time you get a second chance. Sew Long and Happy, Cathy

COMMUNITY SERVICE NEWS

by Betty Vernillo and Marie Arbucci

With 33 percent of our guild year behind us, 16 percent of our members have completed their community service commitment. The September Stars to whom we gratefully say "many thanks" are:

  Leni Blumenfeld
  Debra Bonnard

Helen Darvie

  Marge Geary
  Barbara Hull
  Judy Klein
  Bev Meyer
  Betty Vernillo

We received two more wheelchair bags from Nancy Spatafora; merci, Nancy.

How about filling our coffers before the holiday season rolls in? There is still enough time to finish one quilt for a charitable organization. And won't it feel good to have it off your mind and off your to-do list before November?

We look forward to collecting more quilts at our October meeting.

Quilters Comfort America

A Cooperative Project

To Comfort Victims of Hurricane Katrina

To quilters everywhere:

The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast is beyond belief. Here in Houston our hearts are heavy with sorrow for all the horrible losses, and we are preparing to welcome the thousands of refugees that are being bussed to us because they have lost their homes or have no access to whatever is left of their homes. Like so many other people, we want to help. Knowing quilters, we think you want to help, too, because there are no more generous, giving, open-hearted people than quilters.

Therefore, we are launching a two-part drive for Hurricane Katrina relief, and we urge you to join us in this project. We're calling it QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA.

PART 1: Urgent Donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

We will match EVERY donation made by quilters to the American Red Cross, up to a maximum of $10,000, on a dollar for dollar basis. In other words, if you make a $25 donation, we'll match that with another $25 donation. If you make a $100 donation, we'll match that with another $100 donation, right up to the maximum. To avoid delays in your donations reaching the Red Cross, and because we have trusted quilters for more than 30 years now, just email us with the amount of your donation that you sent to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Every penny of every donation--up to $10,000--will be matched by International Quilt Festival. You have my word on that. Please use this email address: exec5@quilts.com and use the subject line: RED CROSS DONATION.

PART 2: QUILTS FOR COMFORT

Many thousands of the Katrina refugees are being sent to Houston RIGHT NOW, and no one knows how long they will have to be here. Most of them escaped the hurricane's fury with only the clothes on their backs--nothing more--and they may have absolutely nothing to go home to. They don't even know. The Astrodome is ready as temporary housing, but there is a serious shortage of bedding.

Part 2 of QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA is the collection of quilts of all kinds to be distributed to the refugees here in Houston so that they have something soft to sleep on instead of the hard concrete floors of the temporary shelters and something warm to cover up with against the chill of otherwise welcome air-conditioning (we've been in the 90s and 100s for weeks now).

Many of us have unfinished projects filling our closets and cupboards. Get out one of those projects--twin size preferred but no smaller than baby quilt size, please--and finish it up for this. Use lightweight batting--do whatever binding is the quickest, even a close zigzag stitch. You don't have to quilt it--tie it! If you have only small projects, add borders. Think about a mother lying on the floor cradling her baby--that's the size quilt we need to provide. These quilts are not meant to be heirlooms, although they will probably be treasured for many years as a symbol of the caring of strangers. Tie them, machine quilt them, work in a group with your friends and finish several on an assembly line, do whatever it takes to get these finished quickly.

THE NEED FOR THESE QUILTS IS RIGHT NOW! If you already have some finished pieces that you don't have plans for, send them too, as long as they are no smaller than baby quilt size. If you are a professional, you may have sample quilts that have become shop-worn or faded but are still clean and very usable in an emergency--send them!--we are IN an emergency! Be sure to put a label on the back of your quilt or sign it with a kind thought and your name and date. Every piece will go to a refugee family driven from their homes by the hurricane.

To participate in QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA, send an email to exec5@quilts.com (subject line: COMFORT AMERICA) to let us know how many quilts you are sending. That will help us help the Red Cross in its planning. Please do not expect a confirmation that your quilt has been received or any kind of nice thank-you. Sometimes we just have to do things because they are the RIGHT things to do--this is one of those times. People need help...the kind of help WE can give.

Use this address to send your quilt/s:

COMFORT AMERICA PROJECT

c/o International Festival

7660 Woodway, Suite 550

Houston, TX 77063

Please note: for security, do NOT use the word 'quilt' ANYWHERE in your address label!

Many of us have also amassed linen closets full of old but completely usable sheets--perhaps a size you no longer use, or juvenile prints that your college age kids don't like anymore.

Clean sheets and blankets are also most welcome to QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA. Naturally, everything should be clean and fresh. These folks have lived with enough mud and dirt to last them the rest of their lives--let's give them a clean bed to rest in.

Please note that we cannot use fabric, patterns, scraps, etc. Quilt Festival will serve as the collection point for these quilts, and we will deliver them DAILY to the American Red Cross staffing the refugee centers in Houston, where they will be distributed by the Red Cross volunteers. Because we are right here in Houston where more than 25,000 of the refugees will be, we can make a difference RIGHT NOW...if you'll help.

Time is critical--the need is NOW! People are arriving by the hour, children are bedding down on the cold concrete, bedding is needed by people of all ages who have lost everything in this horrible storm. Please help if you can. If you live in or around Houston, you are welcome to hand deliver your donations to us.

Our address is 7660 Woodway, Suite 550, Houston 77063. You can find it on Mapquest. Please note that this is one block of Woodway that runs perpendicular to all the rest of Woodway.

Thanks to everyone!

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

OCTOBER 2005- BARBARA ARNOLD, What Went Wrong. Since the age of nine Barbara Arnold has had a needle of some kind in her hand. Quilting took over about 19 years ago and hasn't let up yet! Like many of us she started out slow but what began as something to do with her Mom and sisters has become a very rewarding profession. Barbara has been teaching quilt making since 1996 and is currently Long Island's only certified teacher through the National Quilting Association. She has taught many classes, lectured and judged here on Long Island and in New England. As a teacher, Barbara hopes to inspire your creativity and encourage you to have fun along your quilting journeys. Barbara will be our judge at the show this year.

DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR SOLD RAFFLE MONEY AND YOUR PRESIDENT'S CHALLENGE ENTRY TO THIS MEETING

NOVEMBER 2005- MARK LAPINSKI has been seen in McCall's Quilts, McCall's Quick Quilts, Quiltmaker, The Quilter and Fabric Trends magazines and was on HGTV's Simply Quilts in January 2005. He has designed many quilts for the Lakehouse Direct Fabrics booth at Quilt Market in Pittsburg 2004. He has also launched a line of his own quilting patterns call "The Quilts of Pickle Road." He won Viewer's Choice at the NJ Quilt Convention. Most recently he conceived and developed the new magazine "Quilter's Home" which will hit newsstands soon. Visit Mark's website: Pickleroad.com to get a preview of his designs.

DECEMBER 2005 - QUILTO This is our 3rd annual "Quilto Party" which again promises to be a fun filled evening with lots of wonderful prizes. Don't forget to bring your Fat Quarter and extra markers to join the fun!

JANUARY 2006 - Join us for a charitable night of Quilting. Bring your one yard cut of fabric to contribute to our "Quilts for Mineola." The Village is celebrating its Centennial Anniversary and this is our opportunity to give back to the Community that has been so generous to our guild. We have a fun filled night planned and to join you MUST sign up under one of the positions needed to make this event a success. We need cutters, sewers, pressers, and "runners" to bring the projects from one station to another. Sign up under the position you want ASAP. As soon as we fill a position, it will disappear and then you'll have to sign up under another position.

This meeting will start at 7:00p.m. with no Triple T's or Show and Tell so that we can create as many quilts as possible.

FEBRUARY 2006 - KATHY BROWN, quilt artist, teacher & judge know for her traditional style combining vivid contemporary color palettes with exquisite hand quilting. Her quilts have been award winners. Kathy enjoys teaching focusing on basic quilting skills. Kathy also will be holding an all day workshop on Saturday, Feb 4th at which we guarantee your hand quilting will improve! Kit $5.00 payable to teacher + $40.00. Seats are limited so sign up ASAP.

MARCH 2006 - Mineola Quilts Wind Up. Now that you've had some time this the night to get together and complete that charity quilt for Mineola. Don't forget that the Village has supported our Guild and this is our chance to show our appreciation for all their generosity.

APRIL 2005 - JANE CLARK STAPEL Lecture "Those Fabulous Feedsacks" A storytelling look at peoples' experiences with wearing and using Feedsacks many years ago. Dresses, bonnets, baby items, men's' fashions, aprons and many household items that make up Jane's abundant trunk show. A short slide presentation will show what people are doing with Feedsacks today. Jane has worked with vintage fabrics since the Bicentennial. She began collecting colorful printed cotton sacks that had been used to hold grain, meal, flour, salt, sugar, and everything else that had to be stored.

MAY 2005 - ANNUAL DINNER & SILENT AUCTION. Bring your favorite dish enough for 10 with a serving spoon to get your tickets to participate in this evening's festivities. Anyone with a last name starting with A to P, please bring an entrée or entrée salad. Anyone with a last name starting with Q to Z, please bring a dessert. If you have any quilt or craft related items to contribute to the auction, please see one of the officers. We will accept any offerings starting in January.

HARVEST OF QUILTS EXHIBIT

As you all know our Harvest of Quilts Show is scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd and Sunday, October 23rd . As many of you have seen, our raffle quilt is complete. Many, many thanks to members Marie Abrucci, Betty Belford, Helen Darvie, Marge DeAcetis, Marge Geary, Barbara Hull, Ellie Pucciariello, & Alice Trutschler for donating their expertise, time and stash to create a truly beautiful heirloom.

Our poles are being shipped on September 9th and should arrive sometime that next week. We are asking all guild members that are working the show to please park in the parking lot next to the Fire House across the street so that there will be ample parking for outside viewers. There is no charge for the meters during the weekend.

This year we have some new vendors:

- A Quilter's Notion

- Woodside Close to Home

- Selden Custom Embroidery Creations

- New Hyde Park Sentimental Stitches

- Cold Spring Harbor Sew Time Sewing Machines

- Westbury The Quilt Basket

- Wrapping Falls

We are also looking for items for our member's boutique. Along with working that booth, you just have to give 10% of our sales to the guild.

All raffle tickets or moneys collected for them should be handed in. Our Viewer's Choice and President's Challenge voting will close on Sunday at 2:00p.m. and the winners to be announced at 3:00p.m.that day. The winners from the raffle tickets will also be announced at that time.

Please make sure that your quilt is in a pillow case or similar package. The case should have your name, the quilt's name and if possible a picture or written description of the quilt attached to it. DO NOT HAND IN YOUR QUILT IN A PLASTIC OR PAPER BAG

Block of the Month

Thank you to Ellie, Leni, Carmen, Ruth, and of course the winner, Anna for contributing to the Block of the Month. Don't forget that if you make one block for yourself at the end of the series there will be instructions for sashing and borders so you can effortlessly complete a quilt for yourself. If you participate in the block raffle you may be that lucky winner and have enough blocks to complete yet another quilt.

Click here to see the November Block of the Month.

Fort Washington PA Quilt Show

Margaret DeAcetis

This was my second trip to the Fort Washington quilt show. The ESQ bus was comfortable and we all had a safe trip. I had forgotten about some of this show's unique qualities. In addition to the WONDERFUL quilts to see, many hand quilted, there were 200 vendors and multiple raffle quilts in and another outside the exhibition hall. All this in one building and on ONE FLOOR.

Imagine my surprise when the first raffle quilt I spied looked surprisingly like our raffle quilt. Obviously 2 guilds showed excellent taste in choosing Mimi Dietrich's "Vintage Memories"design. I scooted right over for a closer look. Here was a unique chance to see what design decisions each group made.

The PA group followed Mimi's color suggestions and applique motifs closely. However, they eliminated the berries. They elected to use a cross hatch pattern in the borders and behind the pillow section. In my opinion the cross hatching sent the eye back toward the quilt center and downplayed the wide outer borders.

ESQ took more liberties with the applique motifs. Betty Belford and Ellie Pucciariello selected more complicated bird and flower motifs. And they appliqued on 54 berries! Jeanne Nalaskowski of Creative Quilting filled the large open spaces in the border by replicating the applique design in her quilting there.

Obviously, quilting offers us unlimited options as to pattern, color, fabrics, design and quilting motifs. We make our individual choices and run with them. What freedom! What fun!

Travelling with Our Raffle Quilt

Margaret DeAcetis

Long Island Quilters' Society graciously allowed ESQ to exhibit and sell chances on our raffle quilt at their September meeting. Marie Abrucci, Helen Darvie, Betty Vernillo, and I manned the raffle ticket table.

We sold tickets, distributed flyers advertising when and where our show will take place, and received very favorable feedback from attendees on our quilt. I even had one person ask if we were accepting new members!

Showing the quilt outside our meeting space afforded us a wonderful opportunity to make ourselves better known to a larger audience. And the more people who see our quilt the more chances we will sell. Please encourage any of your quilting enthusiasts to come see our show. Please sell your tickets, if you haven't already done so.

If you have a venue where ESQ can exhibit and sell chances, please give me a call:

New Quilt Stores

Over the past month, I have had the pleasure of visiting 2 new quilt stores: The Quilting Bug in Massapequa, NY and A Quilter's Notion in Woodside, NY. (See Ads below)

Both stores are wonderful additions to a quilter's shopping list. They have a diverse selection of fabrics which they will be adding to as quickly as they can and they also carry a nice selection of notions and books. Each store offers many classes (including one taught by our own president at A Quilter's Notion) and have bright and spacious classrooms. I urge you to go and see for yourselves!
