Donation to Dress for Recovery

During our outdoor quilt show in Fall 2021, Mary Schuellein was approached by Loraine Alderman from “Dress for Recovery” about having ESQ make seat belt pillows for breast cancer patients.

As you know, the “pillows” wrap around the seat belts and make traveling more comfortable for those undergoing treatment. We included the seat belt project in our Charity Night event and the rest is history! We turned to Cathy Peterson (with very little notice!), who created an excellent pattern for making the pillows, with instructions for including a generous amount of padding, which was especially appreciated.

Recently, Maureen Mitchell, Cathy Peterson, and Jane Hartigan were able to meet and personally donate the 51 seat belt pillows that you made to Loraine.

Last Hope Animal Shelter

June 4, 2022
Wanagh, NY

Mary Schuellein and her husband, Donald, visited the Last Hope Animal Rescue and presented the Outreach Coordinator, Joanne Anderson, with 36 pet beds made by our members. Millie and Betty, two of the sweet dogs waiting for forever homes, enjoyed sniffing and sitting on the pet beds. They were so excited! That very weekend some of the smaller pet beds went home with a few kittens that were adopted. https://lasthopeanimalrescue.org/

Brandywine Residents Bid for their Favorites

May, 2022
Brandywine Living at the Savoy

Evening Star Quilters donated a dozen quilts to the folks at Brandywine Living at the Savoy, specifically for their memory care unit, located on the border of Queens and Nassau. A friend who volunteers there contacted us to say,

“I wanted you to see what we did with the quilts. We had a quilt show and then an auction where the residents could use their brandy bucks ( the fake money they win for playing bingo and such).”

Isn’t that a wonderful idea? They actually hung the quilts all around the room in a show format so the residents could ooh and ahh and decide what they liked and then they actually got to bid on them with their fake money and then keep them!

Hillside Public Library Quilt Exhibit

April 30 – May 6, 2022
Hillside Public Library, New Hyde Park

Our own Karen Gulotta named this long-awaited opportunity to show off our quilts.  “Emergence” seemed especially fitting for this quilt exhibit, and our members supported the show in every way.  Quilts were submitted, volunteers stepped up to hang quilts, serve as docents, and provide hands-on demonstrations.  Approximately 100 visitors viewed our quilts and voted for their favorites.

Mineola Firehouse, Mineola

In December, on behalf of the guild, we donated one quilt to the Mineola Fire Department in Mineola and 6 quilts to Birthday Wishes (a non-profit organization that provides birthday celebrations to homeless children in Long Island shelters). Thank you to the members who donated quilts!
