RaNae Merrill will be our guest speaker for our Thursday, November 5th general meeting.
RaNae began quilting in 1989 when she decided to finish a quilt her grandmother had been making for her when she died in 1975. She continued her quilting adventure by using her grandmother’s unfinished squares to make baby quilts for nieces and nephews. She started professionally quilting in 2005 after selling some fabric design ideas to a fabric manufacturer. She went to Quilt Market that year and the rest as they say “is history”. She published her first book in 2008 with three more to follow. She has been teaching all over the country and in South America (where she teaches in Spanish).
Her lecture will cover her 4th book Free-Motion Mastery in a Month. RaNae will also do a 6-hour workshop. The guild requested that the workshop be split into 2 three-hour classes. The first part of the workshop will be Saturday, November 7th, 1pm-4pm and the second part of the workshop will be Sunday, November 8th 1pm-4pm.
Participants will learn how to set-up their machines, find their perfect quilting speed and get even flowing stitches. Basic shapes, lines, curves, circles, teardrops, s-curves and spirals will be taught. These are the building blocks for other patterns. In class, you will quilt three 12” X 12” quilt sandwiches. You are given 3 different project ideas you can make from your quilted blocks.
The class is taught on an online learning platform – Zoom – that allows you to see and interact with the teacher and the other class participants. At the scheduled time, the teacher and students will log in together – everyone can see everyone else, so you can share work, ask questions, etc. You can view the class on a computer, tablet or phone (you may need to download the app). You will receive login instructions including links and passwords by email and text on the morning of the class. Please “arrive” online during the 30 minutes prior to class so you have time to get set up and learn to use the video conferencing tools.
The workshop will be recorded and posted to a private Facebook page where you can go back and watch the class again. RaNae will check in from time to time to answer any questions you may have.
